Talking about eating disorders WITHOUT TABU
Irena Siniauskaitė, child and adolescent psychiatrist at Kėdainiai PSPC, was a guest at the Open Youth Centre "LANG" of Kėdainiai SJMC. During the meeting, young people had the opportunity to delve into a sensitive, but nowadays very topical topic that is often not discussed - eating disorders.
She explained in a clear, simple and very human way processes that can seem very complex from the outside. She explained how our thoughts, emotions and environment can affect our relationship with food, how unhealthy habits can creep in unnoticed, and the ways in which eating disorders manifest themselves in everyday life. The real-life examples given by the doctor helped the participants to understand more clearly that this problem is not just about food - it is about the inner well-being, the sense of control and the emotional burden that people are often left alone with.
Participants openly shared their experiences and observations. They admitted that the conversation made them think not only about their own habits, but also about the well-being of their friends and family. Many realised that noticing difficulties in the behaviour of others can be the first step in helping. The most important message they took away was that it is normal, healthy and courageous to seek help.
Such meetings encourage the community not to be ashamed to talk about difficulties, help young people to understand themselves and each other better and remind them that help is always available.
