Small Smiles, Big Habits: Children in the Kėdainiai District Learned How to Take Care of Their Teeth

Children’s laughter, curious questions, and teeth painted in bright colors—this is how the activities of the project “Practical Oral Hygiene for Children in Rural Areas of the Kėdainiai District,” implemented by the Kėdainiai PSPC, are unfolding in educational institutions across the Kėdainiai District. The goal of the project is to help children develop proper oral hygiene habits and take care of their dental health from an early age.

Dental hygienists from the Kėdainiai Primary Health Care Center visited the Vilainiai “Obelėlė” Preschool and the Aristava branch, where they not only talked to the children about dental care but also led them in hands-on tooth-brushing activities.

“The children know the theory very well—they recognize what damages teeth, how many times a day they should be brushed, and why plaque forms in the mouth. But the real fun began during the hands-on activity, when we could see where the teeth were cleaned well and where more effort was needed. The children eagerly participated, learned with confidence, and encouraged one another to take care of their smiles,” says dental hygienist Inga Barvainienė.

During the hands-on activities, dental plaque was highlighted using a special dye, allowing the children to see for themselves how well they were brushing their teeth. This activity sparked a lot of excitement and laughter.

“I liked it when my teeth turned blue and I could see where I hadn’t brushed well enough,” said one of the young participants.

“Now I know I need to clean for longer and ask my mom for help,” said another participant in the workshop.

According to experts, parental assistance in helping children brush their teeth is crucial until the age of 11–13, when baby teeth are replaced by permanent teeth. For this reason, the project’s activities focus not only on children but also on their parents and school staff.

To make learning fun and ensure it continues at home, specialists from the Kėdainiai PSPC health education office have prepared coloring books, educational stickers, and informational brochures that explain in simple and understandable terms how to care for teeth and when it is necessary to visit the dentist.

Every healthy smile in a child starts with small, everyday habits. And when learning becomes fun, these habits form much more easily. That is why these sessions are not only a valuable lesson for children, but also a memorable adventure that encourages them to take care of their health every day.
