Tuberculosis Prevention: Why Is the Mantoux Test Important for Children?
Tuberculosis does not discriminate based on age or place of residence—which is why early prevention of this disease is so important in the Kėdainiai District. Although the incidence of tuberculosis in Lithuania is declining, the disease remains a serious concern. In 2025, 634 new cases of tuberculosis were reported in Lithuania, including 20 children.Therefore, early diagnosis and prevention remain among the most important measures for curbing the spread of the disease.
One of the most important preventive measures for children is the Mantoux test. It is a simple and safe test that helps determine whether a child has been infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis before any symptoms of the disease appear. It is important to know that a positive Mantoux test does not necessarily mean that the child has tuberculosis—it simply indicates that further testing and a doctor’s consultation are needed. Early detection of infection allows for timely follow-up testing and, if necessary, the initiation of preventive treatment.
A swab test is performed:
- all children aged 6–7;
- every year for children in tuberculosis-at-risk groups.
Children in high-risk groups include those who:
• have had close contact with someone with tuberculosis;
• have chronic illnesses or a weakened immune system;
• are being treated with immunosuppressive medications;
• have not been vaccinated with the BCG vaccine;
• frequently suffer from respiratory diseases;
• come from socially vulnerable families, live in care facilities, or have arrived from countries where tuberculosis is more prevalent.
A routine pediatric checkup is a great opportunity to discuss tuberculosis prevention. Ask your family doctor whether a Mantoux test is recommended for your child.
The Kėdainiai Primary Health Care Center, as part of the implementation of the 2026 Kėdainiai District Tuberculosis Prevention, Early Diagnosis, Treatment, and Control Program for 2026, not only carries out tuberculosis prevention and early diagnosis but also provides DOTS (Directly Observed Short-Course Treatment)services. These services ensure that patients with tuberculosis take their prescribed medications regularly, thereby increasing treatment success, reducing the spread of the disease, and lowering the risk of drug-resistant forms of tuberculosis. The program is funded by the Kėdainiai District Municipality.
