Preparing for Childbirth – Knowledge Builds Confidence

The more knowledge and preparation you have, the more confident you’ll feel as you await one of life’s most important moments—the birth of your baby.

Attendees at the Kėdainiai District Maternity School gathered for a lecture and discussion titled “Childbirth: Expectations, the Process, and Support,” led by obstetrician-gynecologist Violeta Tamulienė.

During the lecture, students were introduced to the main signs of labor, the stages of labor, possible fetal positions, and their impact on the course of labor. The most commonly used methods of pain relief during labor were also discussed.

Particular attention was paid to the question of when it is time to go to the hospital. It was discussed that it is important to monitor regular, intensifying contractions, note when they begin, and—if your water breaks—note the time, amount, and color of the fluid. It was also explained that the discharge of the mucus plug does not necessarily mean that labor will begin immediately.

The lecturer presented non-medicinal methods of pain relief—movement and changing positions, breathing exercises, massage, gentle stroking, a warm shower or bath—as well as options for medicinal pain relief. It was emphasized that the most appropriate methods are chosen on an individual basis, taking into account the mother’s preferences and medical indications.

An important part of the lecture was devoted to the support provided by a loved one during childbirth. The doctor emphasized that an understanding and supportive partner, open communication with the medical staff, trust, and mutual respect help the woman in labor feel safer.

Danutė Šilkaitienė, the director of the Maternity School, bid farewell to the expectant mothers who had gathered that day with small gifts—the books *Baby Diary* and *Helping Your Child Grow: A Guide to Pregnancy and Childcare*, purchased with funds from the program.

The programme "Promoting a Healthy Start in Life" is funded by Kėdainiai District Municipality.
