"Successful Breastfeeding" — On the Benefits of Breast Milk and the Importance of Bonding

Participants in the Kėdainiai District Maternity School gathered for a lecture and discussion titled “Successful Breastfeeding.” The session was led by certified lactation consultant Natalja Bartkevičienė, who provided expectant mothers with relevant information on how to start breastfeeding, the benefits of breast milk, the most common breastfeeding mistakes, and ways to avoid them.

During the lecture, a great deal of attention was devoted to the bond between mother and baby. The lecturer emphasized that during the first months of life, this bond is strengthened not only by cuddling, rocking, or talking to the baby, but also through breastfeeding.

Breast milk is a natural food tailored to a baby’s needs, providing the nutrients necessary for the baby’s growth and development. Breastfeeding is also important for the development of a baby’s immune system, overall health, and emotional well-being.

N. Bartkevičienė also emphasized the father’s role in the breastfeeding process. A father’s understanding, support, and assistance can be very important to the mother, especially during the first few weeks after childbirth. Therefore, expectant fathers are also invited to attend lectures on breastfeeding and to prepare together for the baby’s arrival.

The lecturer reminded the audience that breastfeeding is a natural process, but getting started isn’t always easy. Therefore, knowledge, preparation, and the right kind of support can help a mother feel more confident, recognize any challenges that arise, and find solutions in a timely manner.

This warm, informative meeting served as yet another reminder that successful breastfeeding depends not only on knowledge, but also on a mother’s self-confidence, the support of her loved ones, and access to professional help.
