Changes to the Funding Program for Early Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer
Effective September 1, 2026, the selection criteria and procedures for the Early Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer Funding Program have changed.
Who is this program intended for?
The preventive program for the early diagnosis of prostate cancer is intended for men aged 50–69 (inclusive). Until August 30, 2026, men aged 45–49 (inclusive) were also eligible to participate in the program if their father or brother had had prostate cancer. As of September 1, this age exception no longer applies.
How is the test performed?
As part of the program, a blood test is performed to determine the concentration of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood. If the PSA level exceeds the established threshold, the family doctor refers the patient to a urologist for a consultation. If necessary, the urologist may perform a prostate biopsy.
How often can you participate in the program?
Generally, the service is provided no more than once every two years, but there are exceptions:
- vyrams iki 59 metų (imtinai), kai PSA kiekis yra < 1 ng/ml, paslauga teikiama ne dažniau kaip vieną kartą per penkerius metus.
- vyrams nuo 60 metų, kai PSA kiekis yra < 1 ng/ml, į programą dalyvauti nebekviečiama.
Important to know
This program is intended for men of a certain age, but if you are feeling unwell or have any health problems, do not wait until you reach the age specified in the program; consult your family doctor instead.
Early diagnosis helps identify the disease in a timely manner and choose the right treatment!
