"Preventing Postpartum Depression" – About Emotional Well-Being After Becoming Parents
Participants in the parenting class gathered for a lecture/discussion titled “Prevention of Postpartum Depression.” Simona Kutavičė, a medical psychologist at the Mental Health Department of the Kėdainiai Primary Health Care Center (VšĮ Kėdainių PSPC), spoke about emotional changes after childbirth, the signs of postpartum depression, available sources of help, and the importance of recognizing changes in a woman’s well-being in a timely manner.
During the meeting, the psychologist discussed how the physiological changes that occur after childbirth can affect a woman’s emotional state. Becoming a mother is a major life change that affects not only daily routines but also one’s relationship with oneself, one’s partner, and one’s family; it brings about changes in outlook, values, and emotions. Therefore, it is important for both partners to prepare for this stage of life and to be able to notice changes in each other’s well-being.
According to S. Kutavičė, complex hormonal and emotional processes take place in a woman’s body after childbirth. Although joy and love for the baby often come naturally, not all women feel well right away. A difficult or complicated delivery, high levels of stress, fatigue, anxiety, and a lack of support can increase the risk of emotional difficulties.
The psychologist emphasized that it is important to pay attention to prolonged feelings of sadness, anxiety, helplessness, lack of motivation, difficulties bonding with the baby, or other concerning changes in one’s well-being. In such cases, you shouldn’t try to cope on your own—it’s important to seek help from specialists.
The lecture also discussed protective factors that can help prevent or reduce the risk of emotional difficulties: a safe and calm environment, support from loved ones, both partners’ readiness for parenthood, rest, self-care, and open communication about one’s feelings and needs.
The participants learned where in Lithuania they can turn for emotional and psychological support, which support options are free, and why it is important to seek help before their difficulties become even greater.
The most important message the psychologist emphasized is that a mother should not be left alone. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is an important step in taking care of yourself, your baby, and your entire family.
